This month I took the plunge and started a BookTok! Find me at https://tiktok.com/@roserhiannon.

I also visited England for the first time in 3 years, which was amazing.

Why did I start a BookTok?

I’ve benefitted from the BookTok community for months; watching amazing videos, learning from book reviews, and enjoying the shared love of reading is inspiring. Reading is such a passion of mine and I decided to start posting a few videos regularly to share some of my favorite books and collaborate with the BookTok community.

The best parts so far are getting recommendations from other BookTokers in the comments, and laughing at myself while making the videos!

Another reason I’m really enjoying the TikTok content creation process is the short turnaround. Most of  the projects I work on for my job take weeks or months to complete, and my writing side hustle has been ongoing for years! By comparison, creating a video and editing it only takes at most a few hours, which feels proper speedy.

Of course, I suppose that’s not counting the hours and hours of my life spent reading the books I discuss on my TikTok… which makes the instant gratification of posting a video about them a little less instant.

What will I do with it?

I’m still learning the ins and outs of video editing, keeping up with TikTok trends, and deciding what types of content I want to focus on. I expect a lot of my videos will center on specific qualities I love in fantasy books, like a sense of humor, anthropomorphic dragons, spooky witches, and interesting family dynamics. Maybe at some point I’ll post about my writing process too. So far most of my videos fall into the “If you liked ___, you’ll love ___” category, where I list three books that are similar. My first video was “If you liked the epic humor of Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir…” and then I shared three fantasy books with similar humor that I’ve loved.

And without further ado, below are some of my BookToks. If you have a TikTok account, you’re invited to follow along!

My first BookTok:

@roserhiannon If you liked Gideon the Ninth’s epic humor!! #booktok #gideontheninth #therook #theunspokenname #theblacktonguethief #fantasybooktok #fantasybook ♬ Requiem for a Tower – London Music Works

And another focusing on anthropomorphic dragons:

@roserhiannon My 3 favorite fantasy books where the dragon characters have unique personalities! #roserhiannon #fantasybooks #fantasybooktok #booktok #bookrecs #fantasybookrecs #dragons #dragonfantasy #mrrdixon ♬ original sound – M. R. R. Dixon

Thank you for reading. Let me know what you think of BookTok in the comments, and please follow along if you’re on TikTok!

You’re my favorite BookToker! Also, what are your favorite books less energetic magic worlds, like that found in LeGuin’s Earthsea books? Thanks!
