I love reading books aligning with the seasons. Horror is one of the few genres that I generally avoid, but I adore books with light creepiness or spook factor. Without further ado, below are my favorite books for spooky season:

  1. Midnighters by Scott Westerfield
  2. Angelfall by Susan EE
  3. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This post dives into more detail, but if you’re curious, I also made a BookTok explaining the highlights for these three stories and why I particularly like to read them during spooky season:

All three recommendations are Young Adult (YA) or Crossover Fantasy, the first book in a trilogy, delightfully spooky, and center on compelling main characters. Below are some more details about why each story is an amazing spooky season read:

Midnighters by Scott Westerfield

This story set in Oklahoma is such a page turner. If you appreciate unique, fantastically detailed magic systems like those of Brandon Sanderson, then you’ll love this one. The monsters are quite horrifying, particularly as the series progresses. Each of the main characters (MCs) has something dark or dangerous in their past, so even though the monsters are terrifying I never worried too much about the fate of the MCs.

Angelfall by Susan EE

Angelfall is a post apocalyptic turn towards spooky, but magic still plays a major part since angels are involved. My favorite part of this trilogy is the MC’s loyalty and love for her sister. The monsters are scary both human and otherwise. This one has some great fight and infiltration scenes, and resides closer to creepy on the creepy/spooky spectrum.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

My favorite part of Nevernight is how unconventionally anti-hero the MC is. If merely reading a book with a spooky magic system or antagonist isn’t enough, read Nevernight and enjoy the fabulously haunted world rife with assassins and shadow magic. Looking for academy backstabbing, potions, and fifty shades of morally gray? Look no further!

What are your favorite books to read during spooky season? I’m excited to read your recommendations. Wishing you a spook-tacular rest of October!
